Nanooks of the Week
Female: Alex Bergholtz, Cross Country – Bergholtz finished 44th at the NCAA West Regionals, hosted by Western Oregon, this past weekend. This was the best finish by any Nanook racer represented at the race.
Male: Koby Huerta, Basketball – Huerta put up six and 12 points in the Nanooks opening-weekend split down in Anchorage. In game two, Huerta hoisted and hit a last-second half-court shot to win the ballgame against Hawaii Pacific, 75-73.

Men's Basketball 1-1, 0-0 GNAC
LAST WEEK: vs. Chaminade (L) vs. Hawaii Pacific (W) | THIS WEEK: at Cal State, Monterey and San Marcos
The men's basketball team opened up their 2019-20 season this weekend in Anchorage as part of the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge, hosted by UAA. The Nanooks fell in their season-opener, 64-90, to the Chaminade Silverswords. Shadeed Shabazz led the way for Alaska in scoring with 19 points. Game two saw Shabazz lead the way in scoring again, however, Koby Huerta was the hero at the end of the game when the junior, transfer, threw up a prayer from half-court at the buzzer and hit the shot, giving the Nanooks a buzzer-beater victory, 75-73 over the Hawaii Pacific Sharks. Alaska will head to Monterey, Calif. this weekend to face off in the Monterey Invite. They will face Cal State, Monterey on Friday, Nov. 15 and Cal State, San Marcos on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Women's Basketball 2-0, 0-0 GNAC
LAST WEEK: vs. San Francisco State (W) vs. Chaminade (W) | THIS WEEK: at Biola, at Point Loma
The women's basketball team left the D2 West Region Challenge with two wins over San Francisco State and Chaminade. Game one they snuck past SFSU with a 71-66 win. Junior, transfer, Jocelyn Gandara led the way for the 'Nooks with 20 points in game one. Sam Tolliver and Kylie Wallace added 17 and 14 points in the victory. Game two was a run-away game from the start as the Alaska squad defeated Chaminade, 92-47 behind 18 points from Sam Tolliver, 18 from Kylie Wallace and 11 from Gandara. The big story for this game was everyone on the roster was able to get in the scoring column. The Nanooks head to Southern California this week to take on Biola on Nov. 14 and Point Loma on Nov. 16.

Cross Country
LAST: NCAA West Region (Hosted by WOU) | NEXT: Nordic Ski
The men's and women's cross country running teams ended their season with some historical finishes. Alex Bergholtz and Anja Maijala were the two female racers from Alaska. Bergholtz ended the race 44th overall with a time of 21:55.7 and Maijala placed 139th with a finishing time of 23:26.4. The men, who raced following the women, were led by Jacob Walsh who ran a 31:36.9 in the men's 10km race. This time broke the Alaska Nanooks record for fastest time in a 10km race. Jack Matherly was right behind him in the history books, running the third fastest time in school history with a 32:02.0. Lukash Platil ended 105th with a time of 32:23.0. The final two for the men were Zephan Ozturgut and Mike Ophoff with times of 33:41.2 and 33:54.5 finishing 159th and 165th. The cross country team will transition into their XC Ski schedule at the beginning of December.

Hockey 6-6-0, 4-2-0-0 WCHA
LAST WEEK: vs. Arizona State (W, L) THIS WEEK: at #18/RV Northern Michigan
The Nanooks hockey team welcomed Arizona State to Fairbanks for the first time in their program history. Game one, on Friday, Nov. 8 went the way of the Nanooks, 4-3 when Kylar Hope scored the game-winning-goal with just over three minutes remaining in the final period. Filip Fornaa Svensson scored his first career goal and ended up with two in the game one victory. Caleb Hite also scored his first NCAA goal. Game two went the way of the Sun Devils. They defeated the 'Nooks 0-4 behind two goals in the first period and two more in the third period. The Nanooks hit the road this weekend to face #18/RV (Receiving Votes) Northern Michigan.

Swim 0-4, 0-2 PCSC
LAST: vs. Azusa Pacific (L, L) THIS WEEK: vs. Seattle University
The swim team is coming off of a three-week break following two close losses to Azusa Pacific in their PCSC openers. The Nanooks fell in their conference-opener 91-114 and then again the following day 94-110. Despite the losses, the Nanooks are making progress to where head coach Rebecca Weiland wants them. This week, the Nanooks will be hosting their final meet of the season, as they get ready to host Seattle University on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16. The Friday meet will begin at 5:00 p.m. AKT and the Saturday meet will begin at 10:00 a.m. AKT.

Volleyball 13-11, 10-6 GNAC
LAST: vs. Concordia (W) vs. Western Oregon (W) | THIS WEEK: at Western Washington, Simon Fraser
Last weekend saw the Nanooks volleyball team grab a pair of victories over Concordia and Western Oregon University. Alaska grabbed the win over the Cavaliers 3-1 behind 16 kills from AveRee Reynolds and 40 assists out of Cate Whiting. The 'Nooks swept the Wolves the following game, 3-0 behind 10 Lahra Weber kills and 17 digs from Makena Overbey. The Nanooks head to the Pacific Northwest this upcoming week to take on Simon Fraser on Thursday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 16 they will face the top team in the GNAC, Western Washington University Vikings.
