FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- The E.F. Horton Range was kind to the No. 5-ranked Alaska Nanooks rifle team, as the Nooks picked up their second-highest score of the season with a 4,709 aggregated score against No. 13 Nevada and No. 17 UTEP on Thursday.

Thursday's score is the first time since the Oct. 18 match against Air Force that the Nanooks have shot over a 4,700. The Nooks also matched their season-best in the smallbore, as they collected a 2,338 to match their season-opening score against Ohio State back on Oct. 17.

"The last week, or two, we've been talking about where our mind is, because our positions have been good," said head coach Dan Jordan. "We had a big team meeting to address that, and they came into today with a brand new attitude and put up a good score. People were solid all across the board today. It was a fun meet and exactly what we needed."

Redshirt sophomore Sagen Maddalena picked up her fifth air gun title of the season with a 598. Maddalena hit a 100 in four of her six rounds, as she helped the team collect 2,371 in the event. Senior All-American Tim Sherry finished second with a 595, while JT Schnering (6th; 589), Luke Johnson (7th; 589), and Soren Butler (11th; 583) rounded out the scoring for the Nooks in the air gun.

Maddalena also led the team in the smallbore with a 587 to place second. Sherry followed his teammate with a 585 to place third, while Butler scored a top-five finish with a 583 to earn fifth place. Johnson placed sixth and Schnering recorded eighth place to finish up the scoring for the Nooks.

Maddalena led the way in the aggregated scoring with a 1,185. Sherry placed second with a 1,180 aggregated score.

UTEP's Rachael Schoenrock placed first in the smallbore with a 588.

Alaska will be back in action on Saturday, as they'll host one of the several NCAA Qualifiers across the nation. The Nanooks will once again entertain Nevada and UTEP at the E.F. Horton Range. First relay is scheduled for a 9 a.m. AKT start time.
