FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
The Alaska Nanooks swim team suffered their first loss since Oct. 22nd on Saturday afternoon, as the Nooks fell to the Concordia-Irvine Eagles 113-92 in a Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference meet at the Patty Center Pool.

"The Nanook swimmers had another good day, although the meet didn't end with us in the win column," head coach Scott Lemley expressed on Saturday. "By playing around with our lineup again, we gave up a bunch of points but swam many best times including another NCAA "B" time standard. Cassidy Heaton is on fire this ear and now has national qualifying times in the three distance freestyle events."

The Nanooks captured five of the 11 events on the day, including the 200-yrd medley relay, the 1,650-yrd freestyle, the 50-yrd freestyle, the 200-yrd backstroke and the 500-yrd freestyle, while the CUI Eagles took home the 400-yrd freestyle relay, the 200-yrd breaststroke, the 100-yrd freestyle, the 200-yrd butterfly, the 400-yrd IM and the 200-yrd freestyle.

Junior Martha Hood, senior Nga Nguyen, junior Noelle Graham and junior Kate Mathews placed first overall in the 200 medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:51.23. Concordia took second and third place with times of 1:56.81 and 1:59.25. respectively.

Mathews turned right around and placed first in the 1,650-yrd freestyle with a time of 18:07.84, a full 21 seconds ahead of Concordia's Jessica Wilson who placed second with a time of 18:28.94. Sophomore Cassidy Kelly placed third with a time of 19:19.50.

In the 50-yrd freestyle, Adams and junior Katie Stark swept first and second place, with Adams posting a 0:24.88 and Stark recording a 0:25.29. Nguyen placed sixth in the event with a finishing time of 0:26.50.

Hood placed first overall in the 200-yrd backstroke with a finishing time of 2:11.12, two seconds ahead of Concordia's Heather Heacock (2:13.40). Alaska's Sierra Kinworthy (2:21.79) and Kelly (2:25.32) placed fourth and fifth overall, respectively.

Heaton continued her distance dominance in the 500-yrd freestyle, placing first overall with a time of 5:06.06. Heaton's time was 23 seconds ahead of Concordia's Tricia Andrews (5:29.29), who placed second overall. Sophomore Abby Blackstone and Kelly also swam in the race, placing third and fourth respectively.

"Some of our sprinters will start to taper next week, meaning they'll cut back on the intensity and duration of practices," Lemley concluded. "By the first weekend in December, our whole team will be rested and ready to secure their trip to nationals.

The Alaska Nanooks swim team takes a break before returning to action Dec. 2-4 when they travel to Seattle to participate in the University of Washington Invitational.
