FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
The Alaska Nanooks rifle team bounced back after a loss yesterday, to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes 4,692 to 4,677 at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range on Saturday morning. Senior co-captain Sagen Maddalena was the highest-scoring shooter for the second-consecutive day, leading the Nanooks to their first team victory of the 2016-17 season.

"I am extremely happy to see the team put the pieces together and perform the way I knew they could as a group," interim head coach Layne Lewis said on Saturday. "This win gave us the boost we needed to get going and hopefully we can keep the momentum moving forward going into our next few matches on the road."

Maddalena posted an aggregate score of 1,186 thanks to a smallbore score of 588 and an air rifle score of 598. Maddalena's air rifle score ties her season-best, which she posted last weekend against Air Force and TCU on Oct. 8. Maddalena's smallbore and air rifle scores were the best of the day.

Alaska's sophomore shooter JT Schnering tied for second overall with a smallbore score of 584 and an air rifle score of 591 to tally an aggregate score of 1,175. Saturday's match marks a new personal-best aggregate and smallbore score for Schenering, who is a Fairbanks native.

Ohio State's Rhiann Travis, Drew Cheezum, Josh Black and Mark Matheny all ranked third, fourth, fifth and sixth overall in the match, with Travis posting the best score aggregate score for the Buckeyes with a 1,175.

Junior Luke Johnson was the third Nanook with the highest-score, placing seventh overall. Johnson posted a 578 in smallbore and an 585 in air rifle for a combined score of 1,163. Redshirt-senior and co-captain Soren Butler placed eighth overall with a 1,161, while newcomer Liam Eberhart (1,155) posted a new personal-best score in air rifle with a 583.
