FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- The Alaska Nanooks swim team completed a weekend sweep of Biola University on Saturday afternoon by picking up a 119.5-83.5 victory over the Eagles at the Patty Center Pool to move to 3-1 on the season.
Junior Katie Stark and sophomore Kate Mathews led the way for the Nanooks on Saturday, as the two each picked up a pair of event titles. Starks captured first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, while Mathews won the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly. In total, Alaska won seven of the 12 events on the day, and took the top two spots in three events.
"It feels pretty good to pick up a pair of wins this weekend," said head coach Scott Lemley. "I expected us to look strong and have a little more speed than we did two weeks ago, and still exhibit a high level of fitness, and that's exactly what happened. We had a few swimmers hit lifetime best and I'm sure some of the girls will be nationally-ranked going into next week, so we are right where we should be."
Alaska started Saturday just like Friday with a dominating win in the medley relay. The team of Victoria Adams, Nga Nguyen, Noelle Graham and Stark posted a combined time of 1:51.25 in the 200-yard medley relay. The Nanooks' medley relay team once again put on a strong performance, as they won the event by 9.4 seconds.
Freshman Cassidy Heaton put on a spectacular display in the 1,650-yard freestyle, as she lapped the entire field to post a personal-best time of 17:50.94 to give Alaska its first individual event title of the afternoon.
The Nanooks followed the 1,650-free with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, as Stark won the first of her two individual titles on the day by posting a 1:59.15 finish. Adams placed second in the event, as she went stroke-for-stroke with Stark before hitting the timing pad at 1:59.32.
Biola University got its first two event wins in the next two races, as Christina Ali won the 50-yard freestyle (25.74) and Lisa Tixier took first in the 100-yard IM. Tixier out-lasted All-American Martha Hood in the 100 IM, as she posted a time of 1:00.11, .34 seconds faster than Hood.
Alaska captured first in the next three events, as Mathews won the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.00), Stark won the 100-yard freestyle (55.05) and Adams won the 200-yard backstroke. The Nanooks would double up in the 100 free and 200 backstroke, as Hood placed second in the free (55.53) and Linnea Doumas took second in the backstroke (2:16.88).
The 500-yard freestyle featured a tie between Biola's Tixier and Alaska freshman Abby Blackstone. The two touched the time pad at 5:24.00 to share the event title.
Mathews took home her final first place finish of the weekend in the 200-yard breaststroke by completing the course in 2:25.18. Today's time in the 200-yard breaststroke is the fourth-fastest time recorded in the event in program history and is currently the 14th-fastet time in NCAA Division II.
Biola rounded out the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as they edged Alaska 3:41.49 to 3:43.50.
The Nanooks will take a two-week break before returning to action on Nov. 13 to open a two-day meet with Cal-State East Bay at the Patty Center Pool.
