Alaska Rifle Captures First Victory of the Season

FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
The Alaska Nanooks rifle team got off to a hot start, as they earned their first victory of the season Saturday, as they defeated Ohio State 4694-4672 at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.

Sophomore Sagen Maddalena and Senior Lorelie Stanfield lead the Nanooks by both shooting 1178 combined smallbore and air rifle. All-American Maddalena shot 584 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle. Stanfield followed by shooting a 587 in smallbore and 591 in air rifle.

Senior Tim Sherry took third place overall shooting a meet-high 590 in smallbore and 585 in air rifle, combining for 1178 points total. Sherry led all shooters in individual smallbore, with Stanfield in second place and Maddalena in third.

Maddalena had the highest air rifle shot of the day, with Ohio State's Mark Matheny coming in second place shooting a 592. Stanfield placed third overall in individual air rifle standings.

Rounding out the top ten Nanooks was Junior Soren Butler (1163) in seventh place, Sophomore Luke Johnson (1159) placed ninth and Senior Jaime Barnes (1157) placed tenth overall.

Ohio State's Mark Matheny their highest placed shooter, placing fourth overall shooting a 580 in smallbore and 592 in air rifle, collecting 1172 points overall.

The Alaska Nanooks rifle team is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, October 18th shooting against the United States Air Force Academy at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range starting 9 a.m.
