MUNICH, Germany & MARIBOR, Slovenia – Freshman
Sagen Maddalena (Groveland, Calif./Natural Resource Management), who is yet to shoot in an official capacity for the Alaska rifle program due to her redshirting, competed in her first two International Shooting Sport Federation World Cups in Europe as a member of the United States national team.
She, along with rising senior
Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biological Sciences) and former Nanook
Matt Emmons, all represented the red, white and blue at the World Cup Munich (June 4-13) in Germany, followed by the World Cup Maribor (June 13-21) in Slovenia.
Maddalena took part in the 10-meter air rifle matches at both venues, placing 47th in the world in her first outing in Munich (June 8) with a score of 412.4 in the 40-shot match. That score ranked second among American shooters and bested Texas Christian shooter Sarah Beard by a tenth of a point.
A week later in Slovenia (June 15), Maddalena improved her first performance and nearly qualified for the individual final. She fired a 40-shot score of 414.0, which ranked 17th out of the field, second among the U.S. shooters and was only 2.4 points shy of the top-8. She was also 1.3 up on Beard in the Slovenia air gun match.
Anderson kept very busy in Munich and Maribor, as he shot in the 10-meter air rifle, 50-meter prone and 50-meter three position matches at both Cups while Emmons competed in the prone and 3P events in both countries.
In the men's air rifle events, Anderson took 81st in Munich (June 8), ranking second from the Americans, with a score of 617.3. His score in Munich was good enough to top Kentucky's Connor Davis, who put together a 614.9. He followed that result up with a 14-spot improvement a week later in Maribor (June 15), taking 67th place with a 613.5.
In the Munich prone match (June 9-10), Emmons and Anderson were separated by a single tenth of a point as Emmons shot a 621.8 to Anderson's 621.7 in the elimination match. Both advanced to the qualification round where Emmons would finish fourth with a solid 626.9 and later placed fourth in the final while Anderson fired a 623.0 to finish 25th.
Moving to Maribor's prone match (June 16-17), Emmons shot a 624.1 in the elimination match while Anderson turned in a 618.0. In qualifying, Emmons beat the entire field by 2.3 points with a score of 630.0 and later took eighth in the final and Anderson finished 32nd after compiling a 619.6.
In the 3P match in Munich (June 11-12), Emmons shot an 1171 in the elimination match and was one point better the next day with an 1172 in qualifying to take 12th place, missing the final by one. Anderson turned in an 1160 in the elimination and fired the 38th-best score in qualifying with an 1163.
The final match for the American men was the 3P event in Maribor (June 19-20) where Emmons would find himself in the final. After tallying an 1170 in the elimination, he placed seventh in the qualifying match with an 1172 and finished sixth in the individual final later in the day. Anderson's World Cup would end in the elimination match as his 1147 was not enough to advance him to qualifying.
