Women’s Skiing Adds Himma out of Estonia

FAIRBANKS – Head coach Scott Jerome announced the Alaska women's skiing program has signed its second recruit to a National Letter of Intent as Martina Himma (Tartu, Estonia) [pronounced Mar-TEENA HEE-muh] will join the team in the fall.

"Martina is an accomplished skier in Estonia," Jerome said. "She is certainly someone who is a developing athlete. We know she has the basic fitness level and technique level to improve into a top skier. It's going to take a year or two, so she won't come in and immediately be at the top of the team but she will fit in nicely and provide depth."

Himma brings in more than a decade of competitive skiing experience in her home country of Estonia. She was part of the skate team sprint championship tandem at the 2013 Estonian Junior National Championships while taking seventh in the individual skate race. Back in 2012 at the same event, she was runner-up in the skate team sprint and won the classic team sprint in 2011.

She has consistently been Tartu Skiclub's best performer in her respective age group since 2005 and also excelled at running as well. She captured the Tartu Running Marathon championship in back-to-back years, winning the U-17 division in 2012 and the U-20 division in 2013.

Upon enrollment, she will major in general studies. Himma joins Sarissa Lammers (Eagle River, Alaska) on the list of incoming women's skiers for 2014-15.
