FAIRBANKS – Sophomore shooter
Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) of the Alaska rifle team has been named the final Ravn Alaska Nanook of the Week for the 2013-14 athletic year, as selected by the Alaska media relations office.
Sherry, in his first NCAA Rifle Championships appearance, captured the individual smallbore national championship by four-tenths of a point and helped the Nanooks to a national runner-up team finish – their highest finish in four years and sixth second-place finish.
He was the first individual national champion for the program since 2008 when
Patrik Sartz won the air rifle title and the first smallbore national champion since 2006 when Olympic gold medalist and Nanook Hall of Famer
Jaime (Beyerle) Gray took first.
In the 60-shot smallbore match, Sherry led the team with the nation's third-highest score of 586 with 35 center shots to place him in the final. The following day, Sherry made another individual final after firing a 593 with 42 center shots in the air gun portion, placing him fifth for the final. He ended up taking seventh in the individual final.
Following the championships, Sherry received three All-America accolades. He was a National Rifle Association First Team All-American in both smallbore and air rifle and was also a Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association First Team All-American, sponsored by Lapua.
The Nanooks will host the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championships on March 13-14 at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range and the Patty Center.
Congratulations to each of our Ravn Alaska Nanook of the Week recipients and we will bring back the weekly award next fall when the Alaska Nanooks begin the 2014-15 athletic year.
The media relations office selected the Nanook of the Week 19 times beginning in November and the department had five repeat winners, led by men's basketball senior
Andrew Kelly (Gilbert, Ariz./Justice), who won it three times.
The four other two-time recipients were Sherry, men's basketball senior
Ronnie Baker (Vallejo, Calif./Communication), men's skiing junior
Logan Hanneman (Fairbanks, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) and women's skiing freshman
Nichole Bathe (Madison, Wis./Elementary Education).
