MURRAY, Ky. – Alaska wrapped up its competitive season Saturday with a pair of shooters in the air rifle individual final and a national runner-up team finish at the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships at the CFSB Center on the campus of Murray State University.

In the air rifle portion of the match, the Nanooks shot the nation's third-highest team score with a 2356, but coupled with yesterday's 2321 in smallbore, their 4677 team score was enough to fend off Kentucky (4675) by two points for second place.

Sophomore Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) and junior Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biological Sciences) both qualified for the individual air gun final after Sherry shot a 593 with 42 center shots to rank fifth while Anderson's 592 with 46 center shots placed him sixth after the 60-shot match.

In the final, Anderson took fourth place while Sherry, who won the smallbore national title a day ago, was seventh.

In addition, senior Mike Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration) was third for Alaska with a 586 and sophomore Lorelie Stanfield (Fairbanks, Alaska/English) completed the team's scoring with a 585. Junior Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden) rounded out the championships with a 575 in air rifle.

The runner-up finish was Alaska's sixth in program history and its highest finish since taking second at the 2010 championships.

West Virginia repeated as national champions after firing a 4705 total score after it combined its 2367 in air rifle with Friday's 2338 in smallbore. The Mountaineers turned in two of the top-three individual scores in the air gun match with a 596 by Maren Prediger and a 594 from Ziva Dvorsak.

The Nanooks will return four of five from this year's NCAA squad for the 2014-15 season. The program will also host the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championships at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range and the Patty Center, which takes place March 13-14, 2015. It will be the second time the Nanooks have been the host institution as they both hosted and won the 2007 event.
