Rifle's Eriksson Second Nanook to Win NCAA Elite 89 Award

MURRAY, Ky. – Nine days ago, the Alaska Nanooks had their first-ever NCAA Elite 89 Award winner as sophomore Michael Fehrenbach (Saint Märgen, Germany/Mechanical) was the winner at the NCAA Skiing Championships banquet.

On Thursday night, junior shooter Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden/Business Administration) stamped his name in departmental history, becoming the second student-athlete ever to receive the award at the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships Competition Banquet at the Murray Room in the CFSB Center.

Eriksson maintains a stellar 3.96 cumulative grade-point average, which was tops among the 47 competing shooters at the 2014 NCAA Rifle Championships. A business administration major, the Swede was recently named the university's Outstanding Student of the Year for Economics in the School of Management.

Student-athletes are eligible for the honor if they have achieved at least sophomore status both academically and athletically and in the second year competing in any sport at his or her current institution.

The athlete must be on the active roster and be a competing member on the team's championship squad at any finals site of a national championship. The winners are determined strictly on cumulative grade-point averages and if two or more student-athletes hold the same GPA, the tie will be broken based on completed collegiate credits.

Eriksson and the rest of the second-ranked Alaska rifle team will compete Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Championships on the campus of Murray State University. The smallbore portion of the event will begin at 9 a.m. CST Friday with air rifle starting at the same time on Saturday.
