Post-Race Interviews
HOUGHTON, Mich. – It's a bitter rivalry between Alaska and Northern Michigan when it comes to the world of skiing and after finishing second to the Wildcats last week, the Nanooks have the region crown on their minds and they set themselves up nicely to claim it.
Alaska took three of the top four spots in the men's 10-kilometer classic race on Saturday at the Michigan Tech Nordic Ski Trails and holds a narrow three-point lead over NMU at the NCAA Central Region Championship.
Junior
Logan Hanneman (Fairbanks, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) led the charge with a runner-up finish after he crossed the finish line in 29 minutes, 55.7 seconds, which was just 1.9 seconds off of Northern's
Kyle Bratrud, who won the individual title in 29:53.8.
Seconds after Hanneman finished, sophomore
Michael Fehrenbach (Saint Märgen, Germany/Business Administration), who battled illness before the race, came in to take third place with a time of 30:02.2. The team's scoring was rounded out by senior
Max Olex (Aalen, Germany/Mechanical Engineering), who placed fourth in 30:37.8.
The Nanooks posted a team score of 66 points to lead second-place Northern (63) by three points as the defending champions NMU had the fifth- and sixth-place finishers following Alaska's trio.
Three other Alaska men were on the trails Saturday, posting a pair of top-15 finishes as well as a top 25.
Sophomore
Kenneth Brewer (Chugiak, Alaska/Biological Sciences) was the fourth Nanook to cross the line with a 13th-place showing in 31:59.6 while freshman
Isaac Lammers (Eagle River, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) was the next race finisher with a time of 32:17.5, good for 14th. Junior
Jonas Löffler (Saint Märgen, Germany/Business Administration) rounded out the team's day in 23rd with a time of 32:57.4
Following Alaska and Northern Michigan in the team standings are College of St. Scholastica (51), Michigan Tech (41), Gustavus Adolphus (30), St. Olaf (22) and Wisconsin-Green Bay (21).
The men's championship continues Sunday at 12:30 p.m. EST with the 20K free skate mass start race to determine the 2014 champions.
