LA MIRADA, Calif. — A record-setting win in the 200 medley relay was the highlight of the Alaska women's swimming team's first day at the 2014 Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference championships Wednesday at the La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center.
Â
With a winning time of 1 minute, 43.06 seconds, the quartet of freshmen
Victoria Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Accounting) and
Nga Nguyen (Wiesbaden, Germany/Psychology), junior
Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Political Science) and senior
Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Psychology) set a new Alaska program record by more than two seconds. The two-year old record of 1:45.08 set on Dec. 3, 2011, also included
Margot Adams and Heller.
Â
The time was also a PCSC meet record, breaking the old mark of 1:43.68 set two years ago by UC San Diego. The Tritons finished third in the race Wednesday in 1:43.56 behind the Nanooks and runner-up Cal State East Bay, who posted a mark of 1:43.43. The top three teams all broke the meet record.
Â
Alaska improved upon its NCAA "B" standard of 1:45.44 swum earlier this season. Its time Wednesday was better than the No. 1 time in the nation entering the week (1:43.40, St. Cloud State) and should move the Nanooks up the national rankings.
Â
Freshman
Kathryn Pound (Pahiatua, New Zealand/Business Administraiton) added to the accolades for the Nanooks Wednesday with an all-conference sixth-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Pound touched the wall in 10:38.70, just six seconds off her career best of 10:32.46 swum at the Husky Invitational in December.
Â
Sophomores
Nina Mullin (Moss Beach, Calif./Biological Sciences) and
McKinley Wallace (Anchorage, Alaska/Biological Sciences) also competed in the 1,000 free Wednesday and each set personal bests while finishing 10th and 12th overall, respectively. Mullin finished in 11:02.11 and Wallace finished in 11:05.75.
Â
After Day One, the Nanooks sit in third place with 172 points. UC San Diego leads the 11-team field with 253 points, while NCAA Division I program Pepperdine is second with 175.
Â
