Women's Swimming in Southern California - Day 1 Blog

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Alaskananooks.com presents the first entry of a daily student-athletes blog documenting the Alaska women's swimming team's trip to Southern California for the 2014 Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference championships.

Throughout the week, different members of the Nanooks swimming team will share their thoughts and experiences on the trip. Fans can also check the Alaska Nanooks social media outlets for updates and photos on the trip, including Twitter (@alaskananooks.com), Instagram (Alaska Nanooks) and Facebook (Alaska Nanooks).

In the blog's first entry, junior co-captain Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/Biological Sciences) and freshman Nga Nguyen (Wiesbaden, Germany/Psychology) chime in about the team's first full day in Los Angeles County:

So today was our first day in La Mirada and our first time at the pool.  And the water was FREEZING COLD! Just the way we like it... but not really, just the way Coach (Scott Lemley) likes it.

We were able to wear shorts all day today. No more negative temperatures! We are thankful for the sun and a chance to race outdoors and soak up some vitamin D.

On our way to the pool the second time, Coach Lemley started driving in the wrong direction. I guess us girls should be driving instead.  But we eventually made it to the pool and had a blast breaking out our two-piece training suits and attempting to get the most sun possible.

Other than swimming, eating, and sleeping, today has been full of homework. Not the most fun thing ever, but that's the life of a student-athlete.

Freshman Nga Nguyen (Breaststroke)
I'm very excited and glad to be here! This is my first "big meet" at a conference championship and I'll do my best to earn the points for our team!

So far the wonderful Californian sunshine has treated me well and made my first two stretch-out practices perfect today. The team dinners were great and delicious.

I'm confident that our team will do great over the next few days and I can't wait to swim fast tomorrow! Go Nanooks!
