Women’s Skiing Completes Longest Race at U.S. Nationals

MIDWAY, Utah – The Alaska women's skiing team raced the longest competition of the 2014 United States Nationals and rookie Nichole Bathe (Madison, Wis./Elementary Education) led the way with a 36th-place showing in the 20-kilometer free skate mass start race Wednesday at Soldier Hollow.
 
Bathe completed the trek made up of 64 racers in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 12.3 seconds to lead the women's squad for the third straight race.
 
Senior Heather Edic (Fairbanks, Alaska/Civil Engineering) was second for Alaska as she came in with a time of 1:07:43.8 to take 46th place, followed by redshirt junior Alyson McPhetres (Chugiak, Alaska/Foreign Language and Geological Engineering) who was 49th in 1:08:42.5.
 
Junior Heidi O'Connor-Brook (Whitehorse, Yukon/Music) was the final Nanook to complete the race as she was 62nd in 1:14:21.2. Redshirt sophomore Kryston McPhetres (Chugiak, Alaska/Emergency Management) was unable to finish in her first race of the season.
 
The Nanooks will round out their competition at U.S. Nationals Friday when they compete in the 1.5K classic sprint race.
