FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Senior
Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Psychology) wrapped up her Alaska dual meet career Saturday with a victory in the 50-yard freestyle and the Nanooks ended their regular season with a 123-82 defeat against Cal Baptist at the Patty Center Pool.
Heller won the 50 free in 24.32 over the Lancers' Patricia Hapsari. Heller later finished second to Hapsari in the 100 free by 0.38 seconds, 52.64 to 53.02. The senior also anchored the Nanooks' runner-up 200 medley relay team, which broke the Patty Center Pool record with a time of 1:47.65. But Cal Baptist's 200 medley relay squad will go into the record books after winning the event in a pool-record time of 1:45.23.
Cal Baptist (8-1) set three pool records Saturday after setting five on Friday. The Lancers also won nine of 11 events to take a dual meet victory for the second straight day. Alaska finishes its dual meet season at 5-9, which includes a 4-2 record against Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive teams and six losses against NCAA Division I teams.
Mary Hanson logged her third Patty Center Pool record in two days, eclipsing freshman
Victoria Adams' (Anchorage, Alaska/Accounting) mark in the 200 backstroke from earlier this season with a time of 2:01.06. She beat Adams in the process, who finished third in 2:10.01. Junior
Gabi Summers (Cheyenne, Wyo./Foreign Language) took second in 2:08.94.
Alena Rumiantceva broke a six-year-old record in the 200 breaststroke for the Lancers, swimming a winning time of 2:21.15. She won the event by more than 13 seconds over runner-up junior
Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/Biological Sciences), who finished in 2:34.86.
Alaska's other victory Saturday came in the 200 free relay, where the Nanooks led from start to finish to win in 1:39.48. Junior
Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Political Science), sophomore
Eileen Audette (Seward, Alaska/Fisheries), Summers and Lyons all had a hand in the win.
The Nanooks will now take 2 1/2 weeks to prepare for the PCSC Championships in La Miranda, Calif., on Feb. 12-15. The meet will be the team's last chance to improve on NCAA qualifying marks before the NCAA Division II Championships on March 12-15.
