Rifle Shoots Season-High Mark in Smallbore to Beat OSU

FAIRBANKS – The second-ranked Alaska rifle team produced its highest smallbore score of the season and was able to down No. 9 Ohio State 4687-4648 on Saturday at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
 
The Nanooks registered a 2345, the highest mark of the year the smallbore discipline, while also turning in a 2342 in air rifle. It was the first time the Nanooks (8-0) turned in a better smallbore score than air gun. The Buckeyes shot just a 2309 in smallbore and added a 2339 in air rifle.
 
Junior Ryan Anderson (Great Falls, Va./Biological Sciences) and sophomore Lorelie Stanfield (Fairbanks, Alaska/English) both fired a 588, tying for match-high honors while junior Mats Eriksson (Malung, Sweden/Business Administration) had a 585.
 
Sophomore Tim Sherry (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mechanical Engineering) turned in a 584 while senior Mike Liuzza (New Orleans, La./Business Administration) rounded out the team's smallbore with a 575. Both Eriksson and Sherry record a perfect 200 in the prone position, made up of 20 shots.
 
On the air gun side, Sherry led the team with a 589, followed by a pair of 585's by Liuzza and Eriksson. Anderson shot a 583 while Stanfield rounded out the squad with a 581.
 
Ohio State was paced by Amanda Luoma, who fired a match-best 590 in air rifle and 583 in smallbore. Remington Lyman was second in both disciplines with a 589 and 582, respectively.
 
The Buckeyes will shoot Sunday against The Citadel, then the Nanooks will close the home stand Monday with a match against the Bulldogs, beginning at 9 a.m.
