Pair of Men’s Skiers Make Quarterfinals in Classic Sprint

MIDWAY, Utah
– Two members of the Alaska men's skiing team qualified for the quarterfinal round of the 1.5-kilometer classic sprint race on the final day of competition at the 2014 United States Nationals Friday at Soldier Hollow.
 
Juniors Jonas Löffler (Saint Märgen, Germany/Business Administration) and Logan Hanneman (Fairbanks, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) both made it to the quarterfinal bracket stage after placing themselves in the top-30 in the 94-man field.
 
Löffler took 22nd place in the prelims with a time of 3 minutes, 57.56 seconds, which was the third-fastest mark by a collegian. Hanneman wasn't far behind as he claimed 25th in 3:59.08, ranking fourth among NCAA student-athletes.
 
In the quarterfinal round, both took fourth in their respective heats as Löffler had a time of 3:51.9 in the fourth quarterfinal while Hanneman crossed the line in 3:52.2 in the third quarterfinal.
 
Four other Nanook men were on the trails Friday and competed in the preliminary race. Senior Max Olex (Aalen, Germany/Business Administration) was the seventh collegiate skier to finish as he placed 34th overall in 4:02.95.
 
Redshirt freshman Isaac Lammers (Eagle River, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) was 47th in 4:09.95 and redshirt sophomore Stefan Hajdukovich (Fairbanks, Alaska/Business Administration) took 49th with a time of 4:10.83 while redshirt sophomore Kenneth Brewer (Chugiak, Alaska/Biological Sciences) rounded out the team when he crossed the finish line in 4:12.62, good for 56th place.
 
Alaska returns to action Jan. 18-19 when they compete in the Telemark Distance Series in Cable, Wis.
