KANEOHE, Hawai'i – Freshman
Mitch Burgess (Temecula, Calif./Petroleum Engineering) was one of four Alaska men's cross country runners to place in the top 20 to lead the Nanooks to a third-place finish at the 13th annual Big Wave Invitational on Saturday morning at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course on the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i.
Burgess completed the five-kilometer course in ninth place (seventh scoring) with a time of 16 minutes, 42.47 seconds, which was a little less than 37 seconds off the lead pace of Hawai'i Pacific's
Fermin Murillo-Villagran, who won the race, made up of 43 competitors, in 16:05.76.
Not far behind Burgess was redshirt sophomore
Ross MacDougall (Astoria, Ore./Foreign Language), who crossed the finish line in 11th place (ninth scoring) with a clocked time of 16:45.76. Junior
Kenneth Brewer (Chugiak, Alaska/Biological Sciences) was 15th overall (13th scoring) with a mark of 16:57.39, followed by freshman
Tal Norvell (Douglas, Alaska/Film) in 17th (14th scoring) with a time of 17:02.35.
Rounding out Alaska's team score was senior
Tux Seims (Homer, Alaska/), who finished the scenic race in 17:11.09, good for 23rd (20th scoring). Other Nanooks on the course Saturday were freshman
Keegan Rankin (El Paso, Texas/Geological Engineering), who was 24th in 17:13.50 and senior
Max Olex (Aalen, Germany/Business Administration), who completed the 5K in 17:33.48 to take 27th place.
Alaska compiled a team score of 63 points, good for third place, behind champion Brigham Young-Hawai'i (42) and runner-up Hawai'i Pacific (60). Following the Nanooks were George Fox (73) and Chaminade (130).
The 'Nooks will have next weekend off before heading back on the road to compete in the Saint Martin's University Cross Country Invitational in Lacey, Wash., on Sept. 28.
