FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — Freshman
Victoria Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Accounting) broke the 200 yard backstroke school record on two occasions Sunday and the Alaska women's swimming team collected four more NCAA "B" qualifying marks on the final day of the Husky Invitational at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center.
Adams broke the nearly five-year-old program record of 2 minutes, 3.56 seconds set by Mar Brunet on Feb. 21, 2009, with a 2:02.36 in Sunday morning's preliminaries. She then lowered her record and NCAA "B" standard time hours later in the finals, finishing third overall in 2:02.28.
Adams' performance gave the Nanooks a total of four new school records set on five different occasions during the three-day competition. The Nanooks come away from the Husky Invitational with one NCAA "A" standard, 24 NCAA "B" standards and 55 total personal bests. Alaska also finished as the top collegiate team and sixth overall in the team standings with 799 points.
Senior
Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Psychology) was the top qualifier in the 100 freestyle prelims, swimming an NCAA "B" standard of 51.03. She would finish second overall with a 51.12 in the finals. Heller ended the weekend with six NCAA qualifying times (1 "A" standard, 5 "B" standards).
Junior
Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Political Science) also notched an NCAA "B" standard time in the 100 free, swimming 51.99 in the prelims before finishing eighth in the evening's finals. The qualifying mark gave her eight total for the weekend.
Freshman
Kathryn Pound (Pahiatua, New Zealand/Business Administration) tallied two NCAA "B" standard times in one race. Her time of 17:36.86 in the 1,650 free was almost three seconds under the standard of 17:39.40. Her 1,000-yard split of 10:32.46 also qualified as an NCAA "B" mark for the 1,000 free event.
The Nanooks take a break for the holidays before resuming competition in 2014. Alaska will travel to Southern California for a tri-meet on Jan. 4 against Biola and Fresno Pacific in La Mirada, Calif. – site of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference championships on Feb. 12-15, 2014.
