– The Alaska men's and women's skiing programs are set to begin the 2013-14 season this weekend when it travels south to compete in the 10th annual Alaska Nordic Cup at Alaska Anchorage, Dec. 7-8.

The Nanooks and Seawolves begin action Saturday at 10 a.m. at Kincaid Park with the women's five-kilometer and men's 10K individual start freestyle technique.

On Sunday, the teams will compete in a mixed-gender, classic relay, which will be made up of two women skiing a 5K leg, followed by two men skiing a 10K leg. Due to a conflict at Kincaid, the site and time for day two of the Cup has yet to be determined.

We will update you once the location and time for Sunday's races are determined.

The new scoring format to determine the 2013 Alaska Nordic Cup champion will include the combined time of the top three men and top three women from Saturday and the top relay team from Sunday.

Representing the Nanooks at this year's event will be five women and seven women.

The women consist of senior Heather Edic (Fairbanks, Alaska/Civil Engineering), juniors Alyson McPhetres (Chugiak, Alaska/Foreign Language and Geological Engineering) and Heidi O'Connor-Brook (Whitehorse, Yukon/Music), sophomore Kryston McPhetres (Chugiak, Alaska/Emergency Management) and freshman Nichole Bathe (Madison, Wis./Elementary Education).

For the men, senior Max Olex (Aalen, Germany/Business Administration), juniors Logan Hanneman (Fairbanks, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) and Jonas Löffler (Saint Märgen, Germany/Business Administration), sophomores Kenneth Brewer (Chugiak, Alaska/Biological Sciences), Michael Fehrenbach (Saint Märgen, Germany/Mechanical Engineering) and Stefan Hajdukovich (Fairbanks, Alaska/Business Administration) and freshman Isaac Lammers (Eagle River, Alaska/Mechanical Engineering) will compete for the Nanooks.

Last season, Alaska won the team title for the sixth time in nine years (6-2-1) by downing UAA 78-48 at Birch Hill in Fairbanks.

Following this weekend, the Nanooks will next be in action with four races at the United States Nationals, Jan. 4-10, in Midway, Utah.
