FAIRBANKS – Senior forward
Andrew Kelly (Gilbert, Ariz./Justice) of the Alaska men's basketball team has been named the Era Alaska Nanook of the Week for the week ending Dec. 22, as selected by the Alaska media relations office.
Kelly helped the Nanooks (5-4, 0-1 GNAC) to an 84-66 non-conference victory over Northland International on Dec. 19 in the athletic department's final sporting event of the calendar year.
In the victory, which ended a three-game win streak and secured a third straight December with a .500 record or better, Kelly brought down a season-high 16 rebounds, tying his career-best total which he achieved on Feb. 9, 2013, against Saint Martin's.
Kelly also scored nine point and dished out three assists in a game which nine players scored and all 11 players recorded at least one rebound.
For the season, Kelly is averaging 11.9 points and is the third-leading rebounder in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with 8.6 boards, which included a league-best 6.1 defensive boards per game. He also ranks fourth in the GNAC with a 63.8 percent shooting percentage (44-69 FG) while placing in the top-20 in assists (2.4 apg – 18th) and free throw percentage (.731 – t-19th).
Alaska returns to GNAC play on Jan. 2, 2014 at home against Simon Fraser at 7 p.m. Two days later, the Nanooks welcome in defending regular-season champions Western Washington at 3 p.m.
Every week of competition during the 2013-14 athletic year, there will be an Era Alaska Nanook of the Week announced. There will not be a Nanook of the Week selection next week to no events the rest of December, but we will return with the first honoree in 2014 on Jan. 6
During the week of Dec. 30 through Jan. 5, there will be plenty of action as women's basketball is on the road at Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene, men's basketball hosts SFU and WWU, hockey hosts Minnesota State, swimming takes on Biola and Fresno Pacific in California and skiing will be competing at U.S. Nationals.
