MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Alaska men's cross country team scored four runners in the top 50 to finish seventh at the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Saturday morning at the Ash Creek Preserve on the campus of Western Oregon University.
The Nanooks tallied 198 points to sit comfortably in the seventh position, turning in scoring numbers of 25, 37, 41, 44 and 51.
Redshirt sophomore
Ross MacDougall (Astoria, Ore./Foreign Language) was the Nanooks' top finisher as he completed the 8,000-meter trek in 26 minutes, 2.88 seconds, which was good for 27th place overall (25th scoring). That was an improvement of six places and almost 25.5 seconds from his 2012 championship run.
Alaska's next three runners all finished in under a 10-second span. Senior
Tux Seims (Homer, Alaska/Civil Engineering) took 41st (37th scoring) with a time of 26:23.55 and rookie
Tal Norvell (Douglas, Alaska/Film) was 45th (41st scoring) in 26:30.24 while junior
Kenneth Brewer (Chugiak, Alaksa/Biological Sciences) finished the 8K in 26:32.17, good for 48th place (44th scoring).
Senior
Max Olex (Aalen, Germany/Business Administration) rounded out the Nanooks' scoring total with a 57th-place finish (51st scoring) with a clocked time of 26:52.49. Freshmen
Keegan Rankin (El Paso, Texas/Geological Engineering) and
Mitch Burgess (Temecula, Calif./Petroleum Engineering) also took part in the GNAC meet. Rankin was 66th with a time of 27:08.15 while Burgess finished the day 68th in 27:17.86.
Seims had an improvement of six places and 27.44 seconds from 2012 and Olex had a vast improvement from last year's GNAC meet, improving his place by 19 spots and running the race nearly 80 seconds faster.
Alaska Anchorage won its fourth conference championship in a row, narrowly defeating Western Washington by three points. The Seawolves had the top three and 32 points (1-2-3-12-14) while the Vikings had all five scorers in the top 10 for 35 points (4-6-7-8-10). Based on the place differences, UAA won the title by just over six seconds.
Isaac Kangogo led the 'Wolves with his individual title run of 24:51.27 and was followed by teammates
Victor Samoei (24:52.14) and
Dylan Anthony (24:54.09).
Simon Fraser took third place (114), followed by Western Oregon (125), Montana State Billings (142) and Central Washington (142). Following Alaska was Seattle Pacific (225), Northwest Nazarene (236) and Saint Martin's (254).
The Nanooks will be back on the course on Nov. 9 for the NCAA West Region Championship, which will take place at the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane, Wash.
