Pair of Fourth-Place Finishes Highlights Day Two of PCSC Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Alaska had a pair of individuals turn in fourth-place finishes on Thursday at the 2012 Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championships, held at the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center.
 
Freshman Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/St. Mary's) placed fourth in the final of the200 individual medley with a time of two minutes, 7.18 seconds. She also qualified through the preliminaries in fourth with a mark of 2:06.89.
 
Sophomore Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Albrecht Thzer Gymnasium) also took fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.68 seconds after a qualification time of 23.57, which was good for third.
 
Freshman Gabi Summers (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central) had a nice day in the pool as she was 10th in the preliminary race of the 500 free with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 5:10.11. She did not race in Thursday night's final. She also placed 14th in the final of the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.80 after qualifying in 11th in 2:11.00.
 
Also in the 50, freshman Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Frontier Charter) was sixth in the preliminary race after hitting the wall in 24.11, but did not race in the final. Freshman Kelly Meierotto (North Pole, Alaska/North Pole) improved 10 spots in the consolation final of the event with a time 25.58 to take 30th after finishing 40th earlier in the day in 25.66.
 
Another consolation qualifier for the Nanooks was freshman Lauren Bailey (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood). Bailey was 21st in the 500 free prelims with a mark of 5:18.24, but cut a few seconds off in the consolation final to take 17th in 5:14.87.
 
On the relay side, the tandem of Lyons, Summers, Meierotto and freshman Genevieve Johnson (Fresno, Calif./University) finished the 200 free relay in sixth place with a time of 1:40.70.
 
Alaska stayed put in sixth place in the team standings with 234 points, two back of Azusa Pacific for fifth place. The nation's top-ranked team, UC-San Diego, holds a commanding lead in the women's championship with 693.5 points, 146 ahead of second-place California Baptist.
 
Day three of the championships gets underway at 9 a.m. Pacific with preliminaries, followed by the finals at 3:30 p.m.
