LA MIRADA, Calif. –
The Alaska women's swim team accomplished something it had never done before on the opening day of the Pacific Collegiate Swim and Dive Conference Championships, held at the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center, as its 800 freestyle relay tandem set the program's first-ever NCAA 'A' cut time in a relay event.

The team of freshmen Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/St. Mary's), Gabi Summers (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central) and Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Frontier Charter) and sophomore Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Albrecht Thzer Gymnasium) set a new varsity record with a time of seven minutes, 30.47 seconds to finish second.

That mark, which automatically qualifies the foursome for the NCAA Division II Championships next month, was over eight seconds faster than the previous record (7:38.88) set at the Husky Invitational back in December and now ranks second in the nation.

“The result was spectacular,” head coach Scott Lemley said. “We dropped over eight seconds from our entry time and achieved our first ever 'A' relay cut. That bought our ticket to Texas for those four girls.”

During that event, Lyons, who led off the relay, turned in a split time of 1:52.31 to move her ranking in the 200 free up to 13th from 35th in the country.

The Nanooks also placed second in the 200 medley relay, as Heller, Adams, Lyons and freshman Genevieve Johnson (Fresno, Calif./University) finished two spots higher of their pre-race seeding of fourth after hitting the wall in 1:46.10.

The University of California-San Diego collected victories in each of the two women's relays on Wednesday evening.

Alaska is currently in sixth place after the first day with 112 points. UCSD leads the pack with 194 points, followed by California Baptist (177), Pepperdine (163), Chapman (128) and Fresno Pacific (121).

The action resumes Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. (PST) with preliminaries. Day two finals are set to begin at 3:30 p.m.

NOTE: Alaska does not compete in the diving events, which would explain the team's sixth-place standing after day one of the championships.
