FAIRBANKS, AK - Just one month removed from a sixth-place finish at the national championships, sixth-year head coach
Dan Jordan announced the rifle program's 2011-12 competition schedule, which includes three matches against former NCAA Champions and one against the 2011 Champion Kentucky Wildcats.
Alaska opens the season on the road with matches at Ole Miss (Oct. 5), Tennessee-Martin (Oct.7) and Murray State (Oct. 8). The Racers are the first former national champions the Blue and Gold will face: MSU won the NCAA crown in 1985.
Later that month the Nanooks will venture south again for a three-match road trip in Texas. They will take the line against Texas-El Paso and Nevada Reno in El Paso on Oct. 29-30 and 2010 NCAA Champion Texas Christian in Forth Worth on Nov. 1.
The Nanooks will host their first home matches in mid-November, welcoming Air Force on Nov. 18 and reining NCAA Champion Kentucky on Nov. 20. The Falcons and Wildcats will meet for a neutral site match on Alaska's E.F. Horton Rifle Range on Nov. 19.
Coming back from the semester break and jumping into the second half of the season, Alaska will make a trip to the East Coast, where they will face the Citadel (Jan. 17), the U.S. Naval Academy (Jan. 19), and 14-time NCAA Champion West Virginia (Jan. 21).
The Blue and Gold will host a pair of NCAA Qualifying matches against Jacksonville State in Fairbanks on Feb. 16 and 18 in preparation for the national championships. The 2012 NCAA Rifle Championships will be held Mar. 8-10 at a site that will be annouced in the fall.
