Jerome Signs Local Skiing Star Logan Hanneman and German Ludwig Schott

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Alaska Nanooks head men's and women's skiing and cross country coach Scott Jerome announced Thursday the signings of Fairbanks standout Logan Hanneman and German Ludwig (LOOD-vig) Schott to National Letters of Intent. Both Hanneman and Schott will enter the University of Alaska Fairbanks in the fall with four years of skiing and running eligibility remaining.

Hanneman, who will graduate from Lathrop High School next month, has had a banner senior campaign. A member of the Fairbanks Alaska Ski Team, he represented his country with Team USA at the Junior I Scandinavian Cup event in Sweden in February, emerged as the best high school skier in Alaska at the state championships and made a case as the top national Junior 1 skier last month in Minnesota.

March proved a golden month for the 6-2 Malemute, as he captured gold medals in all three individual races at the Junior Olympic Nordic Ski National Championships to cap his high school career in winning fashion. The successes continued an impressive string for Hanneman, who just two weeks earlier had garnered the state high school Skimeister Award by sweeping both boys titles at the Alaska State Ski Championships in Fairbanks.

He is ranked 57th in the US in cross country skiing (USSA rankings), and is the top skier in the US born in 1993.

“Logan has demonstrated through his training and racing that he is one of the best high school skiers in the country,” said Jerome. “This is a testament to his training, dedication to the sport, and family support. I anticipate that Logan will be able to score points for our ski team in his first year and help us achieve our goals at the regional and national levels.”

A multi-sport athlete, Hanneman was also a three-year letterwinner for the Malemute swim team. He was a 12-time Region 6 Champion for Lathrop and the anchor on their 2009 regional record setting relay team.

Academically, Hanneman was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Colorado School of Mines Exceptional Student Award in Math and Science in 2010. He is a UA Scholar and plans to pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering at UAF.

“I am very pleased that Logan has chosen to ski and run for the Alaska Nanooks,” Jerome added. “He is the type of person, student, and athlete we seek to recruit. He obviously has a strong work ethic and I fully expect that Logan will excel here at UAF both in athletics and academics.”

Schott is a soon to be graduate of Otto Hahn Gymnasium Futwangen in Germany. As a Junior (Under 20) skier on the international scene, he has recorded three International Ski Federation (FIS) races with fewer than 106 points. His career best race was achieved in the 10 kilometer classic technique FIS race in Goms, Switzerland, on Dec. 5, 2010, when he garnered 91.28 points.

“Though I had been recruiting Ludwig for several months via e-mail and telephone, I first met Ludwig in person this spring while recruiting in Germany,” said Jerome. “I immediately knew that this young man has the personality and dedication to be a very good addition to our team.”

A member of the Wintersportverein Titisee for 15 years, Schott has been one of the most successful skiers in the century old club's recent history. He finished second at the German Championships in 2006 and was third overall the following year. In his career he has collected two gold and two silver medals at the German Cup and four silver and three bronze finishes at the German Skiing Championships.

“He has strong results from his time racing as a junior in Germany and he is an excellent student,” Jerome said. “He is the type of person who will take advantage of the opportunities afforded to him here at UAF and give his very best back to the university.”

Schott will pursue a degree in business administration at UAF.

Hanneman and Scott join Jonas Löffler in the Alaska Men's Skiing Class of 2011.

“The signing of Ludwig, along with Logan Hanneman and Jonas Löffler, has shored up the strength and depth of our men's team for several seasons. I am very pleased that Ludwig has chosen to come to Alaska for his education and represent the Alaska Nanooks on the ski trails.”
