Swimming Posts Three Top 10s, Finishes 12th at Husky Invitational

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Alaska women's swim team wrapped up a successful weekend Sunday with three top -10 finishes and more lifetime-best performances at the 2011 Husky Invitational at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
 
As a team, the Nanooks placed 12th out of 45 teams which scored with 423 points. Their team finish was also third among college squads competing.
 
"We finished the Husky Invite very strong tonight and surprisingly ended up third among college women's teams,” head coach Scott Lemley said. “We achieved many new NCAA 'B' cuts this weekend. We now stand at 19 'B' cuts, many of which may be fast enough to qualify our swimmers for nationals already.”
 
Sophomore Ashley Crowe (Billings, Mont.) qualified for a pair of “Big Finals,” in the 1,650 freestyle and the 200 butterfly. Crowe completed the long-distance race in 17 minutes, 25.88 seconds to place sixth, her highest finish of the weekend. She posted a personal-best time of 2:08.28 for sixth in the preliminary of the 200 fly and later took seventh in the final in 2:09.67.
 
Sophomore Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Albrecht Thzer Gymnasium) qualified for her third “Big Final” as she took seventh in the 100 free prelims with a new varsity record time of 51.64. She broke that record in the final and was sixth in 50.98.
 
Other individual qualifiers Sunday were freshmen Lauren Bailey (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood), Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/St. Mary's) and Genevieve Johnson (Fresno, Calif./University).
 
Baily completed the long trek in the 1,650 free with a time of 18:29.82, finishing 21st. Lyons qualified 19th in the 100 free with a personal-best time of 52.63 and took 22nd in the final in 53.08. Johnson was 18th in the 200 breaststroke preliminary with a mark of 2:27.48, a personal best, and hit the wall in 2:29.73 in the final to place 24th.
 
On the relay side, the team of Heller, Lyons, freshman Kendra Ashwell (Kenai, Alaska / Kenai Central) and Johnson were 13th in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:37.50.
 
The Nanooks will be off for nearly a month before traveling to Flagstaff, Ariz., to face Mesa State for their first meet of 2012 on January 3.
