FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska women's swim team completed its weekend with a 120-85 setback to conference foe California Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the Patty Center.
Despite the defeat, the Nanooks put together a strong result in the final event of the day in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of freshmen Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/St. Mary's), Margot Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Frontier Charter), Gabi Summers (Cheyenne, Wyo./Central) and sophomore Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Albrecht Thzer Gymnasium) set a new pool record after posting a time of three minutes, 37.20 seconds. They won the race by just under 13 seconds against CBU's top foursome.
All four Nanooks also picked up one individual victory each against the Lancers. Summers cruised to win the 200 free in 1:58.60, which was 5.68 seconds better than the closest competitor. Adams followed that up with a victory in the 50 free with a mark of 24.90. This one was a bit closer as the rookie won the race by three-hundredths of a second.
Lyons bested five other swimmers in the 400 individual medley after hitting the wall in 4:44.13. After a CBU win in the 200 butterfly, Heller took the 100 free in 52.58. Adams was right behind Heller in 53.86 for second. It was the lone race that the Nanooks took both first and second.
For Cal Baptist, Adriana Quezada led all swimmers with a pair of individual wins. She first won the 1,650 free with a time of 18:13.46, and later claimed the 200 fly in 2:12.79. The foursome of Mary Hanson, Gina Rhue, Hazel Castillo and Hannah Braun opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.32.
Other winners for the Lancers included Norra Stroh, Kyndal Terwilliger and Molly Larson. Stroh hit the wall in 2:15.21 to win the 200 backstroke, Terwilliger narrowly won the 500 free in 5:23.05 and Larson won the final individual race, the 200 breaststroke, in 2:33.85.
The Nanooks return to action Nov. 11 and 12 when they host Fresno Pacific in a pair of meets in Fairbanks.
