MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – It was a tough day on the range for the No. 2 Alaska Nanooks rifle team as they faced the top-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers on a record-setting day, falling 4696-4646 to their hosts Saturday evening at the WVU Rifle Range.
Led by reigning air rifle world champion and senior Nicco Campriani's triad of program records the host Mountaineers swept the visiting Nanooks (6-3), defeating the Blue and Gold in air rifle, 2374-2333, and smallbore, 2322-2313.
Campriani's collegiate career day saw him shoot a perfect 600 air rifle score and 590 smallbore for a school-record 1190 aggregate score. Campriani's air rifle mark tied a world record and made him just the second NCAA shooter to ever fire a perfect score. Alaska rifle alumnus Matt Rawlings was the first as he attained the mark on Dec. 2, 2005.
For Alaska,
Anna Hjelmevoll had the best team score for the match with a 1168. She tied WVU's Andy Lamson for fourth place.
The letdown marked the second straight for the Nanooks, who lost at Kentucky on Wednesday, and the third straight to the Mountaineers. Alaska still holds the slight advantage in the all-time series meetings, 6-5.
Next up for the Nanooks are a pair of NCAA Qualifying matches at the E.F. Horton Rifle range on Feb. 12-13.
