Shooter Host NCAA Qualifiers Against Alabama-Birmingham

The No. 2 Alaska Nanooks rifle team hosts the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13-14 for a pair of NCAA Qualifying matches at the Patty Center. Events on both days begin at 8 a.m. with Saturday's small bore relays begin shot downstairs in the E.F. Horton Rifle Range and Sunday's air rifle relays and finals taking place upstairs in the Patty Center's main gymnasium. Sunday's fan friendly event features a 10 shot air rifle final beginning at 2 p.m. AKT. There is no admission fee for either of the matches.

ThenPrior to Sunday's air rifle finals there will be a brief Faculty & Staff Appreciation ceremony and each shooter will recognize one UAF faculty or staff member who has made a positive impact on their academic careers. Then the Nanooks will honor their four-member senior class composed of Patrik Sartz (Stora Sundby, Sweden), Jace Bures (Odell, NE), Layne Lewis (Fairbanks, AK) and Billy Galligan (Eagle River, AK).

Following the finals, fans will get the opportunity to meet the Alaska Nanooks, ask questions, see the shooters gear and equipment and test their own marksmanship skills on the electronic target system.

Heading into the weekend, the Blue and Gold are averaging an aggregate score of 4681.33, trailing No. 1 West Virginia's average (4690.33) by just nine points in the collegiate rankings released Tuesday. The Nanooks suffered their only loss of the season at the hands of the top-ranked Mountaineers last month. Kentucky is ranked third overall, just 10 points behind the Nanooks (4671.33).

Despite trailing WVU in this week's rankings, Alaska is in strong contention for their 11th NCAA Championship and fourth under head coach Dan Jordan.They will look to make the most of their final home matches this weekend and hope that Fairbanks area fans can help prepare the team for their 2010 NCAA title run by coming to the Patty Center Sunday to fill the stands for the finals and create some positive pressure and "Championships" type atmosphere.

The 2010 NCAA Men's and Women's Rifle Championships are begin hosted by the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, Texas on March 12-13. Watch the video linked below for more event information.
