Kornfield, Schnurr propel Alaska runners past Central Washington

FAIRBANKS, AK -Freshman Tyler Kornfield (Anchorage, AK) led the Alaska men and sophomore Theresia Schnurr (Buhlertal, Germany) cruised to her second victory of the week, as the Alaska Nanooks men edged Central Washington 28-29 and the women ran away with a convincing 16-42 victory Saturday morning at Brich Hill.

Both the men and women ran a three kilometer sprint through the cool and foggy conditions, which proved tighter races than Thursday's pair of five kilometer bouts. Similar to Thursday's results, CWU's Manuel Santos (9:42.0) was the top finishers in the men's race. Kornfield kept close to the leader throughout the race holding on to second place in 9:58.7, followed by CWU's Matt Nodine (10:00.6) and Tom Johnson (10:01.5).

From there the Nanooks ran in packs as they took slots 5-8 and 10-14. Senior Sam Tilly (Rainbow Valley, AK) improved five places from Thursday, finishing in 10:03.2, while sophomore Mitch Chandler (Chattaroy, WA) jumped up three places with his 10:06.4.

In the women's race first-year runner Heather Edic (Fairbanks, AK) took second in a time of 11:56.3, while Maria Stensland (12:03.8), Aurelia Korthauer (Bonndorf, Germany) (12:11.5) and Rebecca Konieczny (West Yellowstone, MT)(12:23.9) rounded out the Nanooks top five finishers.

Alaska will get little rest before they head to Hawaii next week for the Hawaii Pacific University Invitational on Saturday, September 5, hosted by the HPU Sea Warriors.
