Rumford, ME – The Nanooks didn’t fare as well as they hoped on Saturday afternoon in the freestyle races of the 2009 Cross Country National Championships hosted by Bates College in Maine.

Coach Scott Jerome had aspirations for twins Julia Pierson, the Central Collegiate Ski Association freestyle champion, and second place finisher at CCSA’s, Anna Coulter, to compete for a top ten finish in the 15K freestyle. However, Pierson settled for 18th with a time of 40:22.08 and Coulter finished 21st at 40:31.4.

Right behind Coulter was freshman Theresia Schnurr in 22nd place. Schnurr crossed the line at 40:32.5.

Denver’s Antje Maempel followed up her classic national title by winning Saturday’s race as well and leading her school to the team national championship. Maempel won the race with a time of 38.50.

It was not a good day for Oyvind Watterdal in the men’s 20K as he finished 39th with a time of 53:35.2.

Done with collegiate racing, Alaska comes back to Fairbanks and hosts the U.S. Long Distance National Championships at Birch Hill in two weeks.
