FAIRBANKS, AK - The Alaska Nanooks swim team went to the pool on Friday night and dropped their contest to the Kutztown Golden Bears 123-76. Mariya Pavlovskaya (Korolev City, Russia)took home two victories as the Nanooks only managed three victories total.
The Nanooks grabbed their first victory in the 400-yard IM as Pavlovskaya raced out to an early lead, and never looked back, smoking the competition en route to the victory. Courtney Nichols (Columbia,SC) took home second in the event with a 4:51.25 time for Alaska.
Pavlovskaya also took home a victory in the 200-yard backstroke where she cruised to victory by over two body lengths.
Kelly Becker (Tualatin, OR) gained the Nanooks only other first play finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:17.97. Becker was able to capture an early lead and finished strong to hold off the Golden Bears.
Nichols also picked up a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:32.87) as Kinsey Laine (Silver Lake, WA) narrowly took third place with a strong finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
In a rare occurrence at the Patty Center, there was a tie race between two of Kutztown's swimmers. Both Golden Bear swimmers finished the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.23, tying for first place.
The Nanooks will return to the pool tomorrow to finish their dual meet with Kutztown. The Blue and Gold will also be recognizing two seniors before the meet is set to begin. The meet is set to start at noon with senior recognitions to be at 11:50 a.m.
