Box Score

Within one point down the stretch, the Alaska women’s basketball team could not pull out the road victory in the opening game of their 2008-09 GNAC schedule as they fell at Western Oregon, 72-68.

Alaska had four of their eight players score in double figures led by Junior Ronisha Edwards who had 17 points on 8-18 field goals and also added a team high nine rebounds.

However, Alaska’s lack of depth showed tonight as Edwards and guard Megan Thigpen both fouled out, leaving the Blue and Gold with only six eligible players at the end of the game. Thigpen was a perfect 5-5 from the field with 11 points before she fouled out.

The Nanooks shot better from the field than the Wolves and they also committed fewer turnovers, yet the Wolves outscored Alaska at the free throw line by 16 points. WOU was 24-28 from the charity stripe while the Blue and Gold made eight of their 12 attempts.

Alaska falls to 5-5 (0-1 GNAC) overall and now travel up to Saint Martins for the second leg of their three game road trip on Saturday. The Nanooks will finish their road trip on Jan. 14 when they take on Montana State-Billings.
