West Point, N.Y. - Led by Cody Rutter in smallbore and Patrik Sartz in air rifle, No.1 Alaska remained unbeaten as they defeated Army 4645-4628 on Wednesday at West Point.
Rutter scored 589 in the smallbore, besting Army's Stephen Scherer for the top spot by four points. Sartz's score of 578 was tied for fourth highest, and Alaska's William Galligan and Jace Bures rounded out the scoring for the Nanooks posting a 571 and a 570, respectively.
Not involved in the team scoring was Ida Peterson who posted an individual score of 575. Alaska, however, outscored Army by seven points in smallbore, 2308-2301.
Sartz was the top scorer for Alaska in the air rifle with 588, just one point behind the overall top score of Army's Wesley Hess.
The Blue and Gold's depth proved very useful in outscoring the Black Knights by 10 as Rutter and Galligan followed up Sartz's 588 with scores of 586 and 585. Taylor Beard rounded out the four with a 578, and Alaska grabbed a 17 point victory.
The three-time defending national champions continue their East Coast road trip on Saturday as they participate in the Palmyra Invitational in Palmyra, PA. Alaska looks to earn their 11th National Championship in school history at seasons end.
