Fairbanks, AK - For the third time this season, senior goalie and Hobey Baker candidate Chad Johnson has been recognized as the CCHA Goalie of the Week. Johnson allowed one goal to the visiting Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha this past weekend and backstopped the Nanooks to four crucial conference points.
Johnson denied all 32 shots he faced on Friday in route to a 2-0 shutout triumph. The Calgery, AB native recorded his fourth shutout of the year, and the fifth of his career.
He was just as good on Saturday night as Johnson denied the Mavericks on 27 of their 28 shots and shined in the shootout victory in which he turned away all three UNO skaters he faced. The four points on the weekend broke the third place tie the Nanooks and the Mavericks shared, and Alaska now sits tied with Miami for second place with 25 points.
On the weekend, Johnson saved 59 of the 60 shots he faced. He leads the CCHA in goals against average (1.50), and save percentage (.945 percent).
The Hobey Baker Award is an annual award comparable to Heisman Trophy. The recipient demonstrates outstanding performance on the ice, but is also recognized for being an outstanding citizen. Last year's Hobey Baker Award Winner was Kevin Porter of U-M. Johnson would be the first ever Alaska Nanook to be honored with the Hobey Baker Trophy.
