FAIRBANKS, AK - The Alaska Nanooks split a pair of matches Friday at the Montana State Billings Invitational, taking down Northern State in four sets (3-1) before getting swept by Hawaii-Hilo (3-0).
Senior middle hitter Korlyn Bolster led the Nanooks with 29 kills, .377 hitting efficiency and 5 blocks, while junior setter Alexa Sherman dished out 78 assists, 10 digs, six kills and four blocks on the day. Junior libero Hannah Armstrong led the Nanooks defensively with 30 digs and rookie middle blocker Marybeth Wikander was solid at the net with eight blocks.
After getting a cold start in the first set against Northern State (25 , the Blue and Gold responded to take the next three sets in a trio of 25-23 victories. Junior libero Hannah Armstrong got a team-high 18 digs in the backcourt, while junior outside hitter Megan Thigpen tallied 17.
In the afternoon tilt, Alaska's third match in less than a day, the Nanooks were unable to overcome their physical and mental fatigue as they were blasted 25-13 by UHH in the first set. They managed to keep it close in the second and third sets, but were ultimately undone by the Vulcans by a pair of 25-23 losses.
The Nanooks (5-3, 1-0 GNAC) resume tournament play Friday against University of Mary and Notre Dame De Namur.
