The Alaska Nanooks women’s basketball team brings in the New Year by hosting Kuyper College for a two game set at the Patty Center Tuesday Dec. 30 and Wednesday Dec. 31.
Alaska (3-4) tries to move over .500 for the first time this season against a Kuyper team that comes to Fairbanks from Grand Rapids, MI with a record of 2-10.
The Blue and Gold take the court for the first time in over a month against the Cougars. The last time the Nanooks were in action was when they hosted the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational in which they were 2-1 including an upset victory over No. 10 Holy Family, 60-59.
Over the break Alaska added Jasmine Marshall to the roster from San Bernardino Valley College. Marshall is a 5’6’’ junior that will play guard for the Nanooks. Marshall averaged 16 points and 8 steals per game last year at Valley College.
Prior to the tip in Tuesday, there will be a brief acknowledgement for Sheena Brown who became the 15th player in Alaska’s history to record 1,000 points. Brown reached the milestone by hitting two free throws in the team’s one point victory against Holy Family on Nov. 28. Brown sits in 15th place on the all-time scoring list at 1,014 points.
This is just the second year for the women’s basketball program at Kuyper College. In their inaugural year the Cougars posted a record of 10-14. Members of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), Kuyper recorded their wins this season over Emmaus Bible College and Grace Bible College.
The game on Tuesday the 30th is scheduled to tip at 7:00 p.m. while the game on Wednesday tips at 6:00 p.m. followed by fireworks outside of the Patty Center at 8:00 p.m. These are the final two games before the Nanooks jump into GNAC competition.
The Blue and Gold start conference play with three games on the road then come home for five games including their conference home opener against the third ranked team in the country in Alaska-Anchorage on Jan. 17.
