The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics announced Tuesday that D'Arcy Stanfield of Chicago, IL has been named the men's basketball assistant coach. Stanfield's post with the Nanooks alongside head coach Clemon Johnson, and assistant coach Ted DeLeon, officially begins on Jan. 4.
Stanfield joins the Alaska coaching staff after spending two years as the varsity head basketball coach at Percy L. Julian High School in Chicago. In his first season, Stanfield guided his team to the Regional finals, enjoyed an 18-8 record and coached a guard that led the conference in scoring at 26 ppg.
Before taking the head-coaching job at Percy L. Julian, Stanfield served as the Athletic Director and Dean of Students at Andrew J. Brown Academy in Indianapolis.
Stanfield also brings college basketball experience with him, as he was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Chicago State University from 2002-05. In his time with CSU, Stanfield was a part of some historic wins, including a conference tournament victory over Valparaiso in 2005. That year the Cougars fell one game short of the NCAA Tournament as they lost in the Mid-Continent Conference championship game.
While receiving his bachelor's degree in physical education at Indiana University, Purdue University, Indianapolis, Stanfield served on the Jaguars coaching staff focusing on recruitment and scouting.
He also worked with the Indiana Black Expo, a non-profit organization, which uplifts and celebrates the accomplishments and achievements of African-Americans throughout Indiana, on the athletic staff promoting awareness of the athletic program and individual sports camps. Through his efforts, Stanfield increased the camp's attendance by 15 percent.
Stanfield arrives in Fairbanks just as the team dives into their conference schedule. He and the Nanooks begin their quest for a conference championship on Jan. 8 as they play host to Central Washington at the Patty Center. The Blue and Gold were swept by CWU last season.
