Box Score
Alaska failed to convert on five power-plays but held on for a shootout victory over Lake Superior State and are now unbeaten in their last four games.
The LSSU Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period behind Troy Schwab's fifth goal of the season. However, the Nanooks would even the tally before intermission with Dustin Molle's (Anchorage, AK) first goal of the season at 14:18. Molle ripped a shot through traffic and beat Lakers netminder Brain Mahoney-Wilson glove side high. Molle was assisted by Brandon Knelsen (Three Hills, AB) and Dustin Sather (Wanham, AB).
The Lakers were sent to the penalty box three times in the second 20 minutes, but the score remained even at 1-1. Alaska was only able to outshoot LSSU 11-10 in the second period and could not break the even tie.
The Nanooks would start the third period with another man advantage in the first 1:08 which they did not capitalize on. The Blue and Gold could not convert any of their five power play opportunities and the two teams had to settle the result in overtime.
"Their goalie made some timely saves during those power-plays," said Assistant Coach Brian Meisner. "We had some good shots though."
Alaska and LSSU remained scoreless during the 5:00 overtime period as each team gained one point in the standings headed into a shootout.
Nanook goaliee Chad Johnson denied all three LSSU shooters while Alaska's Braden Walls (Calgary, BC) ripped his shot past goalie Brain Mahoney-Wilson for a 1-0 shootout victory.
The win moves Alaska to 8-4-2 overall and 6-3-1-1 in the CCHA: good for 14 points and a three-way tie for third with Ohio State and Ferris State.
