YAKIMA, WA – Senior Chris Eversman improved his course time by 30 seconds and freshman Theresia Schnurr was just three spots shy of a top-ten finish as the Alaska Nanooks men's and women’s cross country each landed sixth place finishes at Saturday's Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships.

"I am very proud of the runners on both teams," said head coach Scott Jerome. "For our teams and where we are, there were great performances all the way around. It was a solid day for us."

Schnurr was the highlight of the day for the Blue and Gold, finishing just 15 seconds out of tenth place in her first conference meet, as the Nanooks top finisher of the event. Her time of 23:16.27 was almost a minute faster on the same course the previous month (24:05.00) at the Apple Ridge Run.

“Thirteenth place as a freshman: I think that that speaks a lot about the future for her as a runner,” Jerome said. “That’s great for the future.”

Sisters Julia Pierson and Anna Coulter were the next two finishers for Alaska, crossing the line 26th (23:56.36) and 28th (24:02.62), respectively.

Also making noticeable improvements were Jana Benedix (53rd) and Amber Drumm (66th), who both bested their previous marks by 40 seconds.

Other finishers for the Nanooks included Auerlia Korthauer (55th) and Elisabeth Habermann (60th).

The women totaled 158 points, behind Northwest Nazarene with 123 and in front of Saint Martin’s, which finished the meet with 179 total points. Seattle Pacific took the women’s title with 48 points, including the individual champion Jessica Pixler and two more top-ten finishers.

On the men’s side, Eversman landed a team-best 31st place finish in his final conference race, in 27:12.00. The Nanooks senior captain ran the same course in 27:45 five weeks earlier on September 13 at the Apple Ridge Run Invitational.

Rookie Mitch Chandler was second best for the Nanooks, taking the meet’s 38th spot in 27:41.00, while Einar Often, Matt Scerbak and Ray Sabo finished within 30 seconds of each other, taking 42nd, 47th and 51st. David Apperson (59th) and Erik Soderstrom (70th) rounded out Alaska’s point getters.

Alaska finished with 183 points to tie Northwest Nazarene, trailing Seattle Pacific (119) and ahead of Central Washington (213 points) for the second time in as many meets. Alaska Anchorage took home the team title, ending the day with just 34 points.
