SEATTLE, WA- Alaska's men's basketball team suffered a similar fate as the Nanook women, as a slow start cost the Blue and Gold a conference loss against Seattle, 78-56. The Redhawks opened the game with a 18-0 run, and the Nanooks would never recover as Seattle enjoyed a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the contest. The loss sends the Nanooks to 4-12 on the season (1-6 GNAC), while Seattle moves to 10-6 (3-4 GNAC).
The Redhawks came out scorching hot, hitting 61 percent of their shots in the opening stanza and getting points on their first eight possessions to put the Nanooks in an early hole. Seattle also enjoyed a significant rebounding advantage, hauling in 34 boards to 24 for the Blue and Gold.
Alaska's Kevin Atkins led all scorers with 17 points, knocking down seven of his 14 shots from the floor. Freshman Bobby Pico had 13 points as well, while Colin Matteson also contributed 12 points, playing all 40 minutes for the short-handed Nanooks.
Seattle got 16 points from Chris Gweth, and 14 points from Michael Wright, whose seven rebounds was also a game-high. It was the Redhawks depth, however, that ultimately sunk the Nanooks. Seattle used 12 players in the game compared to just eight for Alaska's, outscoring the Blue and Gold 25-12 on bench points.
The Nanooks now return to the friendly confines of the Patty Center, where they will meet Northwest Nazarene on Jan. 31 at 7:00 p.m., following by a meeting with Seattle Pacific on Feb. 2.
