Final Stats
FAIRBANKS, AK- Alaska struggled to keep pace with the high velocity offense of Central Washington in a Saturday matinee at the Patty Center, as the Wildcats cruised to a 91-69 win over the Nanooks. A torrid first half of shooting essentially killed off the contest before the break, as the Wildcats posted 49 points on 61 percent shooting in the opening frame. They would end the game having hit 37 of their 64 shots from the floor: a 58 percent clip.
The Nanooks could hit just nine field goals in the first half, heading into halftime with just 26 points. The Blue and Gold would respond well in the second half, shooting 54 percent from the floor, and even outrebounding the Wildcats by a 33-30 margin. But Alaska could not trim down the significant Central advantage, as they fell to 4-10 (1-4 GNAC) on the season.
Central's Brandon Foote paced all scorers with 26 points, missing just three of his thirteen shots on the evening. The Wildcats put four players in double-digit scoring, with Matt Penoncello, Johnny Spevak and Giovonne Woods all enjoying stellar games.
Junior Colin Matteson led the Nanooks with 16 points, shooting a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line. Alaska's Kevin Atkins just missed out on a double-double as well, adding nine rebounds to go along with 15 points.
The Nanook men now return to the road next week, visiting Montana State Billings on Thursday, Jan 24 and Seattle University on Jan. 26. Alaska's next home game will be on Jan. 31, when they welcome Northwest Nazarene to town for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
