Alaska stumbles in Seattle

Seattle, WA - Alaska got a 20-point effort out of junior guard Kari Reabold (Fairbanks, AK), but Seattle University used its defensive pressure to suffocate the Nanooks, snapping their four-game winning streak with a 72-55 victory Thrusday night in Great Northwest Athletic Converence action.

Rookie forward Caitlyn Rohrbach (Edmonds, WA) added a double-double for Alaska with 15 points and 11 rebounds and senior Karen Rabung (Nikiski, AK) chipped in seven points, while freshman Sarah Herrin (Nikiski, AK) pulled down a career-high nine boards.

Seattle entered the game eighth nationally in field goal percentage allowed at just 33.8 percent. They also rank 29th nationally in steals per game at 12.1 and went over that average with 16 thefts versus Alaska.

The Nanooks opened the game with an early 5-0 lead, but the Redhawks responded with an 11-0 run to build a lead that they would not relinquish. The Redhawks held the Nanooks to just 27.8 percent shooting in the first half to take a 34-28 lead to the break.

Seattle extended its lead in the second half with better shooting from the floor as well as getting to the free throw line. After being shut out in the first half, Seattle made ten shots from the charity stripe.

The Nanooks fought back getting as close as six points before SU's Ashley Brown took over, scoring 14 of her 18 points in the second half to widen the gap.

Brown led the team with 18 points and three assists, and three steals. Laina Sobczak contributed 15 points and four rebounds, while Cassidy Murillo chipped in 13 points and four steals.

Alaska outrebounded Seattle 49 to 37, but could not overcome the 24 to 10 margin in turnovers.

Seattle allowed just 31.7 percent shooting from the field and forced 24 Nanook turnovers.

The loss dropped Alaska to 9-12 and 4-6 in the GNAC, while Seattle improved to 16-5 overall and 7-3.

The Nanooks continue on the road in Bellingham, where they face Western Washington on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. AKST.
