Fairbanks, AK - The Alaska Nanooks women played tight with Central Washington for 20 minutes but let the game slip away in the second half of a 75-63 loss Thursday night at the Patty Center. The Wildcats (15-7 overall, 5-6 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) used a 12-0 run early in the second half to overcome a one-point deficit at halftime and take command against the Nanooks (9-14, 4-8).
Alaska chipped the lead to within four at 58-54 with 4:26 left on three-point play by junior Kari Reabold (Fairbanks, AK). But Elyse Mengarelli hit two free throws and Brandi Bounds nailed a three-pointer to secure the road win for the Wildcats.
Reabold had a game-high 19 points for the Nanooks to take home Toyota Player of the Game honors. Freshman Caitlyn Rohrbach (Edmonds, WA) continued her improved play in conference with 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Cristina Bruketta (Ellensburg, WA) added 10 points. Senior Mia Seagraves (Long Beach, CA) had team-highs with eight boards and three steals.
Center Laura Wright led a balanced Central squad with 17 points and nine boards. Point guard Ashley Fenimore had 15 points including four three-pointers. Mengarelli and Bounds chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field including a 9-of-10 effort from behind the arc.
The loss snapped a three-game home winning streak for the Nanooks.
The Nanooks now face Seattle Pacific, who lost tonight at the University of Alaska Anchorage, on Saturday. The Falcons, the GNAC's second-place team, will tip-off with the Nanooks at 2:00 p.m. AST at the Patty Center.
