Nanooks struggle against Vikings on the road

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Junior forward Kari Reabold (Fairbanks, AK) led the Nanooks with 16 points however Mollie Stelmack scored 18 of her game-high 28 points in the first half as Western Washington University defeated the Alaska Nanooks, 98-57, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday evening.

Alaska fell to 9-13 overall, 4-7 in the conference, while Western improved to 16-6 overall and 8-3 in the GNAC.

The score was tied at 12-12 with 12 minutes to go in the first half, but Western took control of the contest by running off 10 straight points, seven of them by Stelmack, in a 3:40 span to take a 22-12 advantage. The Vikings then broke the game open with a string of 16 consecutive points later in the half to go up 40-18 with two minutes remaining, and held a 42-19 advantage at halftime.

Western then put the game completely out of reach by opening the second half with an 11-2 run to go up 53-21 with 17:26 to go. The margin was never under 28 after that.

Forward Sarah Schramm came off the bench to score 14 points for Western, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the field. Forward Liz McCarrell had 12 points and guard India Soo added 10. The Vikings hit 56.1 percent (32-of-57) from the field, including 65.5 percent (19-of-29) in the second half.

Western had a 40-26 rebound advantage with forward Krystal Robinson grabbing a game-high nine boards.

The Nanooks return to Fairbanks this week to host Central Washington and Seattle Pacific at the Patty Center or Thursday and Saturday, Feb. 15 and 17.
