FAIRBANKS, AK- A day after placing a conference-high seven volleyball players on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic team, the Alaska Nanooks cross country team had nine runners receive conference academic honors on Thursday. Four Alaska men were named to the GNAC All-Academic list, including senior Vahur Teppan, whose perfect 4.00 grade point average was tops on the men's side. Five Nanook women were honored as well.
"I think it's a great indication of what kind of athletes we have on our team: they are very bright and hard working," said head coach Scott Jerome. "Some of our best athletes are also the best students in the university. That really says a lot about how much our cross country athletes are able to accomplish and where their priorities lie."
In addition to Teppan, who was also the Nanooks' top finisher in two of his four races this season, Alaska placed chemistry major Chris Eversman (3.90 GPA), business administration major Marius Korthauer (3.88 GPA) and anthropology major John Parry (3.67 GPA) on this year's All-Academic squad. The honor marks the second straight year that Korthauer has been named to the list, while Teppan, Eversman and Parry are all first-time selections.
On the women's side, Krynn Finstad landed a spot on the All-Academic team for the third consecutive year, ringing up a 3.45 GPA in her Psychology and Criminal Justice double major. Elisabeth Habermann led the Blue and Gold women with a 3.86 GPA in chemistry, followed closely by Julia Coulter (3.65 GPA, biology major), Anna Coulter (3.45, business administration), and Tamra Kornfield (3.36, mechanical engineering).
For Habermann and the Coulter twins, this marks the second straight season they have been named to the GNAC All-Academic team, while Kornfield receives the honor for the first time.
