FAIRBANKS, AK - The Alaska Nanooks couldn't match a high-scoring University of Michigan squad in a 6-2 loss Friday night at the Carlson Center. The 13th-ranked Wolverines went up 4-0 after two periods and then traded goals with the Nanooks in the third to keep the game out of reach.
The win moved Michigan to 16-9-0 overall and 11-6-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, while Alaska dropped to 7-12-4 on the year and 5-9-3 in dropping their eighth straight.
Wolverine senior center T.J. Hensick notched a hat trick in the victory with a goal in each period to lead the way for the visitors.
Sophomore center Andrew Cogliano got Michigan on the board 6:15 into the game with an assist to sophomore defenseman Mark Mitera and Hensick made it 2-0 nothing two minutes later.
Brandon Naurato, a sophomore left wing, tallied the eventual game-winner past Nanook goalie Wylie Rogers (Fairbanks, AK) at the 4:46 mark of the second period.
The Nanooks finally got on the board when sophomore center Adam Naglich (Las Vegas, NV) put one past Wolverine goalie Billy Sauer 9:48 into the third. Michigan answered with a Hensick tally four and a half minutes later.
Junior left wing Kyle Greentree, the Nanooks leading scorer, put in the Nanooks final score with 3:19 left before Michigan added an insurance goal less than a minute later from senior defenseman Matt Hunwick.
The Wolverines peppered Rogers (2-8-2) with 30 shots on goal, putting five past the junior. Freshman Erik Largen (Fairbanks, AK) came in to relieve Rogers and gave up the late goal to Hunwick in just his second app. Sauer (14-9-0) stopped 29 of 31 in the net to earn the win.
Senior center Curtis Fraser took home Toyota Player of the Game honors with two assists, which gave him his 100th and 101st points as a Nanook. He is just the 27th Nanook to notch 100 points, the last being Cam Keith (2000-2004) with 100 exactly.
Alaska was just 1-for-8 on the power play but the Wolverines weren't much more effective with a 2-for-8 effort. Hensick's last two scores came on the man advantage.
The Nanooks continue CCHA play against the Wolverines tomorrow night. Face-off is at 7:00 p.m. AST in the Carlson Center.
