ROHNERT PARK, CA - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team was defeated in its final two matches of Sonoma State's Seawolf Spike Saturday, falling to the California State University Monterey Bay 3-1 (30-23, 22-30, 30-20, 30-26) and then CSU Stanislaus 3-0 (30-25, 30-18, 30-19).
In their first match of the day the Monterey Bay Otters outhit the Nanooks .277 to .191 in the match. Junior outside hitter Jessica King (Hailey, ID) had a match-high 20 kills for Alaska, but it wouldn't be enough.
Freshman setter Alexa Sherman (Calabasas, CA) came off the bench for a match-high 40 assists along with 13 digs.
Looking for its first win of the tournament and the season against Cal State Stanislaus, Alaska came up short again as they struggled against a strong Stanislaus defense that held it to a hitting percentage of .018 in the match.
Alaska's junior co-captain Jenna Jones (Fairbanks, AK) had a team-high six kills and got 14 digs from sophomore libero Miranda Trudeau (Chimacum, WA). King also got 11 digs and finished the weekend with 44 kills, 50 digs and six service aces.
Freshman rightside hitter Jessica Hill (Colorado Springs, CO) finished the tournament with 38 kills and 19 blocks, while freshman middle Megan Thigpen (Spokane, WA) contributed all around with 31 kills, 53 digs and 10 service aces. Sherman notched 119 assists on the weekend and 47 digs.
The Nanooks are winless in the season thus far (0-4) but return to Fairbanks next weekend to close out their pre-season schedule, when they will host the Eighth Annual Auto Service Company Nanook Classic at the Patty Center.
The tournament field includes the University of Nebraska-Kearney, Alderson-Broaddus College and the University of Chaminade. Alaska opens their tournament play Friday night against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers at 8:00 p.m. AST. Chaminade and Alderson-Broaddus will play the opening match of the tournament prior to the start of the Nanooks game at 6:00 p.m.
